Mk2 Golf 16V G60
After much discussion with our customer, the build brief was finalised. We were to build a 16VG60 engine in the external appearance of the factory Golf Limited edition, to include JMR Stage 4 supercharger rebuild and JMR oil recycling and crank breather system. To be paired with a custom built 02A gearbox with selected TDi gears and a Quaife LSD. The engine compartment was to be stripped and repainted, to include the front panel. All running gear front the underside, to be stripped, renewed, powder coated and rebuilt with all new bushes and hardware. The suspension to be replaced with KW Classic Variant 3 kit and Powerflex front top mounts. The front and rear brakes to be replaced with upgraded components. The 3 piece wheels to be stripped, refinished and rebuilt incorporating new dishes and bolts. All new lighting up front. A new steering wheel to be fitted. Full suspension setup and alignment. Fresh MOT prior to full valet and handover.
With the addition of some smaller additional works, discovered along the way, as is often the case, with vehicles of this age, having been in very long term storage. This was the build brief. The owner wanted an uplifted version of the Mk2 Golf, inspired in part by the Limited 16VG60, but not a copy, moreover, a build to take advantage of improved technology of present day.
The build went very well, despite being extended significantly by the pandemic, which restricted access to parts and limited our progress option in so many ways. Completion was a huge moment for the owner, as indeed he had not driven this Golf for 11 years, with it having been in storage for so long before arriving at our workshops. The test drives we completed in this build, brought many memories flooding back to me of my own Corrado, when it was running one of our 16VG60 engines. The sound of the engines is sublime, a friend described my own Corrado, when heard at 7500 RPM, as “a swarm of angry hornets”.
Custom builds like this are very much part of what we do at JMR. We welcome your call to discuss your desired project.
